Silver sulfadiazine is prescribed with different treatments to help treat wound infections in patients with severe burns. It functions by preventing the expansion of bacteria that may infect an open injury. This allows reducing the risk of the bacteria growing to nearby skin, or to the blood where it can cause a severe blood infection (sepsis). The medicine belongs to a type of medicine named sulfa antibiotics. It must not be utilized on premature infants or infants during the initial 2 months of life because of the chance of harsh side effects.
